A hand held camera being poorly operated while moving around the backroom of a pub.

Smith making not the slightest attempt to lip sync properly.

Fabulously bad wallpaper.

Random members of the band sitting at the bar and playing pool.

Brix doing absolutely nothing.

An empty beer glass on the table.

The North of England outside the window.

This was the song that made me hate the Fall for many years until that damascene moment that we all experience when it all slips into place and you’re finally part of the club.

Possible lineup:

Mark E. Smith – vocals, piano, violin
Craig Scanlon – guitar, vocals
Steve Hanley – bass guitar
Paul Hanley – drums, keyboards
Karl Burns – drums, bass guitar
Brix Smith – guitar & vocals

- Mark E. Smith in Rare Agreeable Interview Mode

I met Gaz Top once and, let me assure you, he was an absolute twat. You know when someone famous expects you to be in awe of them because they’re famous, well, hopefully you don’t but that was what Gaz Top was like. This is why it’s even more of a surprise to me that Mark E. Smith gives such a coherent and respectful interview here. Did Brix have such a calming influence on him?

I don’t know a great deal about this show, called APB, apart from the fact that it was ‘short-lived, although I can confirm that this broadcast is from 1988. There’s a brief clip of an Adult Net song, which confirms my belief that Brix’s best work was her contribution to the Fall. Feel free to argue her worth…

As good as ever. The rest of the ’87 Festive 50 will be posted next week. Promise.

Sometimes I ask myself if why I like The Fall so much. Then I watch a clip like this and wonder what I was thinking. This is awesome.

I’ve always had a thing for bands with two drummers. Peel finally got an opportunity to get his favourite band on national TV, I believe this was their first appearance on any nation-wide program.

If you like The Fall as much as me, look at some of my other posts, such as thid documentary about Smith at the age of 50, or The Fall’s set at John Peel’s 50th in 1989 .

This is an epic, epic live performance from November, 1984.

Introduced by a very young looking Andy Kershaw, this is such a powerful performance from Smith and the band. Although I’m no great fan of modern dance I do think the presence of Michael Clark and a few close friends greatly enhances the spectacle.

I love this more every time I watch it, download it here or watch it on youtube here. Mark E Smith noted in a recent BBC documentary that it was really funny because the other members of the Fall had made their parents watch this on telly and all you could see was ‘Michael Clark’s arse.’

This performance happened the same month that the Band Aid single was released. Does anyone know if the Fall were invited to perform at Live Aid?
