I look forward with great anticipation to your comments on this one…

Going to junior school (junior high to Americans among you) in the South of England in the late ’70s and early ’80s meant only one thing: you were a Madness fan. Failure to like this band could lead to a duffing up on the playground. Girls of course had the luxury of being able to like Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet, but such behaviour would never do among the boys. Nevertheless, I’d only just turned 6 when this was broadcast, as had my peers, so failure to stay up and listen to the Peel show wasn’t really a beating up offence.

Madness’ only Peel session, recorded 14th August, 1979:

Track list

The Prince
Bed And Breakfast Man
Land Of Hope And Glory
Stepping Into Line

Lineup

Mike Barson (Keyboards)
Suggs (Lead Vocals)
Mark Bedford (Bass)
Woody (Drums)
Chris Foreman (Guitar, Vocals)
Lee Thompson (Saxophone, Vocals)

Convenient ‘listen now’ option:

  1. I was 14 – and I certainly remember them being seen as ‘a little kids band’, ‘a novelty band’. I don’t think anyone really thought they would last beyond a couple of singles….LOL! as I believe the young people say.

  2. PS: Oh and sorry, I meant to say – thank you; lovely to hear these.

  3. Certainly is lovely and you’re more than welcome. We all had our copies of ‘Rio’ at home but any mention of Duran Duran was strictly taboo.

I should make it clear that clicking on the ‘Madness’ only Peel session, recorded 14th August, 1979′ will enable you to download the tracks.

  8. Suggs isn’t singing ‘Bed and Breakfast Man’, although he does on the album, and subsequently live, etc.

    It wasnt Mike’s voice either.

Remotely possible that it was Lee’s voice… but I think it was Chris !

  9. Good call, I’ll also go for Chrissy boy on that one.

  10. It’s definatly Chrissy Boy Foreman singing Vocals on Bed & Breakfast Man (As Chris used to sing it live in the early days…same way that Barson used to sing My Girl)
Snippet Fact…Did you know the first few hundred copies of the One Step Beyond Album had a Misprint for this track and had the track listed as “Bed & Breakfast”
Copies of these are worth a few quid…..
