Tons of fabulous new Peel stuff over at the king of Peel blogs John Peel Everyday, including this show. It’s noted that the transfer from tape to computer has caused some of the early 80s shows to run a bit fast. Well, I’ve started the laborious process of slowing them down. These downloads run 5% slower than the show on John Peel Everyday. This show marks the debut of the most famous haircutted band in history, Flock of Seagulls.

There was also a belter of a cup final that year (and replay), although be warned that if you follow THIS LINK you’ll end up watching the Chas ‘n Dave Tottingham cup final song, not highlights of the game.
That’s a great job mate: thanks for doing it! Yes, poor Peelie does sound rather strangulated at high speed, so it’s great to hear his dulcet tones in the proper pitch.
It’d be great if you could do the rest. Oh, and what audio editing software did you use, BTW?

I’m still boggling at the juxtaposition of A Flock of Seagulls and John Peel. Did the band have a cult following before they were successful in the US? Were they just great blokes?

I used a freely available audio editing software called wavepad. Not the best but very ease to use and free.
I’ll get round to the others asap, I’ve just received a very fine series of Peel narrated documentaries on the history of folk music from 1999, which I’m going to put on the blog too. Thanks again to Chris who supplied us with the end of year ’77 show for these.

AFOS were actually quite a “cool”
indie band when they first started.
I saw them in a pub in Liverpool and its one of the best gigs of my life. The rock media started to mock the haircut a couple of years later when they were more poppy. Bill Nelson “discovered” the band, and he was a friend of Peely….
I quite like mid-80′s electro-pop
eg Howard Jones, OMD. Good Pop music died in 1986 !
